PHOENIX — Maricopa County has adopted a $2.2 billion budget that includes additional funding for criminal justice and millions in state-mandated cost shifts.
County supervisors unanimously voted to adopt the budget for the upcoming fiscal year on Tuesday. The county will spend nearly 52 percent of its budget on public safety and criminal justice including the addition of 30 probation officers, 26 new county prosecutors and two new initial appearance courtrooms.
The county said it will spend $32.2 million in state-mandated cost shifts and direct contributions to the state.
Supervisor Andy Kunasek said Maricopa County will continue to deliver quality services despite absorbing $269 million in cost shifts from the state since the beginning of the Great Recession.
He also said Maricopa County's long-term debt is among the lowest in the country.
