Makeover of Phoenix's Ritz-Carlton Triggers Layoffs Of Almost 200 Workers

The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Phoenix will lay off its nearly 200 employees next month when the hotel shuts down to undergo an extensive makeover.

The hotel, located at 24th Street and Camelback Road, will close July 24 and reopen around December or January as The Camby Hotel,  which will be part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, a smaller line of unique, upscale hotels, each with their own identity.

Greg Miller, vice president of Destination Hotels & Resorts, the hotel's new management company, said in a statement that most of the employees have been offered jobs when the hotel reopens.

The looming layoffs triggered a notice filed by Marriott with the Arizona Department of Economic Security under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or the WARN Act. The act is a federal labor law whereby employers with at least 100 employees are required to give a 60-day notice ahead of any large-scale layoffs.

The hotel is one of only two Ritz-Carltons in Arizona — the second being the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Marana — although there are plans underway for another location in Paradise Valley.
