The U.S. Forest Service has announced the location of the first work under the Four Forest Restoration Initiative.
The Environmental Impact Statement covers the Coconino and Kaibab national forests, while the 4FRI area also includes the Apache-Sitgreaves and Tonto forests.
Forest officials said a thinning project in the Fort Valley area and a thinning and prescribed burn in the Lake Mary watershed area will be among the initial projects to be completed within the 600,000 acres covered by the EIS.
The Arizona Daily Sun reported Forest Service officials said the goal is to begin prescribed burning in the Upper Lake Mary Project.
Spokeswoman Brienne Pettit said they want contracts in place for thinning in both projects next year.
