Maricopa County officials are scheduled to vote Wednesday on a proposed $950,000 settlement that would resolve a lawsuit filed over a man's 2013 death from a stomach ulcer while in a county jail.
The family of Felix Martinez Torres Jr. alleged the jail's medical staff provided the wrong medicine to treat his ulcer and didn't respond properly to his condition. Jail officers also were accused of ignoring Torres' pleas for help.
Torres was arrested after police stopped him for riding his bike against traffic and discovered that he had outstanding arrest warrants for driving with a suspended license.
The case was filed against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the county, which is responsible for medical services in the jails. The jails' medical operation isn't under Arpaio's authority.
