Arizona Lawmaker: Change US 60 Marker Dedicated To Confederate President Jefferson Davis

A black state lawmaker is calling for the removal of a roadside mark er on U.S. 60 in Apache Junction that honors Confederate President Jefferson Davis and the re-naming of a highway section bearing Davis’ name.

Phoenix Rep. Reginald Bolding said it’s not right to honor those who supported slavery.

“We should not go through our daily lives and honor or celebrate symbols of hate, symbols of separation, symbols of segregation, that’s not something we should be doing,” Bolding said.

But Bolding said a name change application to the Arizona State Board of Geographic and Historic Names requires submission of a replacement name for the highway and mark er.

He’s inviting people to share their ideas for a name to replace Davis.
