Friday’s high temperature is expected to be 110 degrees. Twenty-five-years ago on this date, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport recorded a historic temperature of 122.
On June 26, 1990, the airport briefly grounded outgoing flights because it may have been too hot for the planes to take off.
Julie Rodriguez with Sky Harbor said it was not necessarily the heat that was stopping them.
“At the time, the performance charts did not reach a temperature that high. The aircraft performance data was not available for temperatures over 120 degrees,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said those charts tell pilots how much runway is needed to take off. She said the airlines updated their charts that day to go up to 127 degrees, depending on the aircraft manufacturer.
The highest recorded temperature in state history was 128 degrees in Lake Havasu City on June 29, 1994.
