Every year, the townspeople of Yarnell come together to share memories of the Yarnell Hill Fire. Above, a member of the Central Yavapai Fire District rings a bell 19 times, in honor of the 19 firefighters who died in the blaze.

On Sunday, the people of Yarnell honored the 19 firefighters who died trying to protect the tiny town in 2013.

Tuesday marks the tragedy’s two-year anniversary. Many people who lost homes shared their experiences of the fire.

Lew Theokas shared memories of his grandson, Garrett Zuppiger, who died in the blaze. Theokas said he and other locals should honor the Granite Mountain Hotshots by how they live every day.

"Let us try to live fuller lives, better lives, as we remember them and their sacrifice," Theokas said. "Let us look at the good in ourselves and in each other and try harder to be the people that they were and would have been."

This was Yarnell’s second-annual remembrance event. The Yarnell Hill Fire destroyed 127 homes and was the deadliest wildfire in Arizona history.
