Supreme Court: EPA Did Not Account For Cost To Companies

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's attempt to limit oil and coal power plant emissions. The 5-4 decision said the EPA failed to take into account the cost for companies installing and operating equipment which removes toxic emissions from the air.

The EPA said they had factored in the costs when they wrote the standards expected to reduce emissions by 90 percent by April 2016.

However, the EPA said the costs were considered a factor to be dealt with during a later stage.

Officials from Salt River Project, who operate the coal powered Navajo Generating Station in Northern Arizona, said in a statement, “SRP has been complying with most of the provisions of the federal Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) rule since April of this year.”

They said they will continue to comply with any plans to reduce emissions at their plants in accordance with the previous 2016 deadline.
