Mohave County Considers Hike In Property Tax

Mohave is the latest county to consider raising taxes this year, and some county officials are blaming the state budget for the increase.

More than $2 million were shifted from the state onto Mohave County this year. That could force them to raise the property tax rate by 15 cents, amounting to a $15 increase for a home valued at $100,000. But some state lawmakers from the region reject that the state is responsible, saying the county has other sources it could use to plug the hole.

Between 2008 and 2014, the Arizona Legislature moved more than $400 million onto counties in Arizona.  This year, Maricopa County is raising taxes slightly, and Pima County recently asked the Supreme Court to block one of these costs shifts that it calls unconstitutional.
