Maricopa Animal Shelters Seeing Spike In Strays After Holiday Weekend

Animal shelters in Maricopa County have more occupants than normal. In addition to the typical rise in strays during the summer months, Melissa Gable with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said they are seeing more runaway pets after the Fourth of July weekend.

“We took in 121 stray animals on Sunday," Gable said. "Right now, I think we have at our Phoenix and Mesa locations [about] 1,057 dogs and cats.”

Gable said most of the pets don’t have visible ID tags.

She said the county shelters are staying open an extra hour to accommodate pet owners as they look for their lost animals.
