A federal ruling on Tuesday now requires cities and counties that receive federal grants for fair housing to look more closely at their plans before they can receive those federal dollars.
Jay Young is the director of the Southwest Fair Housing Council, a nonprofit fair housing group in Arizona. He said the new requirements will cut down on violations that happen when obligations to the Fair Housing Act are not met.
"The idea is not to punish jurisdictions, the idea is to really further fair housing and look at access to opportunity in our communities," Young said.
Grant applicants will have to use new tools and data provided by HUD. They will need to meet these new requirements within 30 days.
