John McCain now has a Republican primary opponent in his bid for a sixth term next year.
State Senator Kelli Ward has officially launched a challenge to unseat Arizona’s senior U.S. Senator. The 46-year-old Tea Party favorite, in the midst of her second term in the Arizona Legislature, went right after McCain’s conservative credentials in a YouTube video released by her campaign.
"He’s an American hero who’s earned our respect," she said in the video. "But as the senior senator from Arizona, John McCain has too often disappointed conservatives.”
Ward, a doctor of osteopathic medicine from Lake Havasu City, used her credentials to attack McCain’s lack of action against The Affordable Care Act.
"As a physician, I’ve seen what Obamacare is doing to ravage our healthcare system," she said. "But Senator McCain isn’t providing the strong leadership needed to repeal it.”
In response, the McCain camp accused Ward of making bizarre statements and using questionable judgment.
