Chandler Unified School District Students Head Back To School Monday

For most schools in the Valley, there are still a few more weeks left of summer vacation. That’s not the case for the Chandler Unified School District — students there are going back to school Monday.

Camille Casteel, the district’s superintendent, said it may seem like an early start, but it isn't unusual for Chandler Unified.

"It’s the norm for Chandler. It’s not new. We began this particular calendar, we call it a modified year-round, where we go nine weeks of instruction and two week breaks. And we started this back in the '90s," said Casteel. "I think the entire district converted to this calendar in ‘96 or ‘97."

Casteel said one reason the district went to this modified schedule was to reduce the amount of learning loss that can happen over the course of a 12-week break.

She also said the district has consistently received positive feedback from parents about the calendar.
