Maricopa County Seeks Funds To Clear Backlog Of Untested Rape Kits

Thousands of rape kits remain untested in Arizona. Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said his office is applying for millions of dollars in grants allowing authorities to test kits that have never been looked at.

“Some would permit testing of all agencies inventory of sex assault kits. Other grants would allow us to go through and select which sex assault kits should be prioritized for testing,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery said he eventually wants to test every kit, including cases where an offender has already been identified.

The National Center for Victims of Crime said it can cost between $400 and $1,500 dollars to test one rape kit.
