About 100 opponents of a proposed copper mine in central Arizona were in Washington, D.C., yesterday to protest the project.
The group, known as the Apache Stronghold, and their supporters marched from the White House to the U.S. Capitol in hopes of convincing lawmakers to support the Save Oak Flat Act, a measure designed to repeal a federal land exchange that allows Resolution Copper to run a copper mine near Superior.
The nearly 20-day trek from Arizona to D.C. began in Tucson earlier this month. Officials with the San Carlos Apache tribe have opposed the swap since it was approved last December saying some of the land involved holds religious significance.
However, proponents of the exchange said the deal will bring jobs and billions of dollars in long-term economic activity to the area.
