When it comes to stocking state rivers and streams with trout this year, the Arizona Game and Fish Department is hoping to do more with less.
In the last few years, Arizona’s fish hatcheries have had a hard time keeping up with demand for trout. Officials said much of the shortage can be attributed to the region’s extended drought as most facilities rely on spring water to raise their fish.
Nick Walters, with the AZGFD, said stocking popular fishing spots has been a challenge. He said that’s why department officials are now experimenting with efficiency, so anglers don’t notice the drop in stock.
"During the past few years, our data suggested that we could maybe stock fewer fish in certain areas and still maintain targeted catch rates," Walters said.
The study is entering its third year. Walters said officials have not yet set an end date.
