The SA Hill fire has grown to about 1,800 acres with 10 percent containment. A lightning strike started the fire about a mile south of Mayer on Sunday night. U.S. Forest Service’s Adriane Ragan said the increase is due to the burn-out operations over the past day.
"Fire crews are going out and putting fire down on the ground to burn the fuel that would be from the head of the fire to the area where we want to prevent the fire from going towards," Ragan said.
Ragan said the fire is still a good distance away from the Mayer community and no private property or structures are at risk. But until they get some more moisture in the area, they do expect fire activity to continue for the next couple of days. The area is also expected to have considerable smoke impact near Highway 69 and Interstate 17.
