The Arizona Department of Transportation said US 89A is partially open Tuesday morning. Traffic will alternate using one lane.
ADOT crews are still clearing mud and rocks off the roadway caused by heavy rain over the weekend.
US 89A was closed between Marble Canyon to Jacob Lake for more than 30 miles after Sunday’s storm affected the north route to the Grand Canyon. Jacob Lake is located at the junction of US 89A and US 67, the route to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
"Right now, our crews and also heavy equipment are removing some large boulders off the roadway," said Dustin Krugel od ADOT. " Some of them are about 15 foot in diameter and they may have traveled more than two miles from the nearby Vermilion Cliff. So these areas [have] very massive boulders."
Krugel said once the roadway is cleared, ADOT engineers will assess the area to see if there’s any damage from the storm. Officials said it’s hard to determine how soon US 89A will completely reopened.
