Five new Arizona health centers have been awarded $1.9 million in Affordable Care Act funds to deliver comprehensive primary health care treatment to more than 30,000 patients.
The grants announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell will fund the opening of the Arizona health centers. Two will be in Phoenix and the others in Somerton, Flagstaff and Casa Grande.
The federal government announced new funding Tuesday to add 266 new centers in Arizona and 45 other states. Since health center funding began under the ACA, more than 700 centers have been opened.
The program is designed to increase access to primary health care regardless of patient ability to pay. They are run by public and private nonprofit groups that draw on some federal funding to deliver services.
