Man Drowns After Jumping Into Raging Tucson Creek

Authorities in Tucson said a young man drowned after jumping into a raging creek and being swept over a series of waterfalls.

Pima County Sheriff's Department officials said in a statement that 21-year-old Hunter Douglas Miller and two friends had gone to Tanque Verde Falls near Redington Pass on Tucson's east side Tuesday afternoon to swim. Miller jumped from a cliff into the water at a spot known as Turkey Shoot or The Shaft, and his friends told deputies he never surfaced. The water was running swiftly down the cascading falls.

A search by volunteers begun by the Southern Arizona Rescue Association and a sheriff's department helicopter was suspended due to severe weather.

A homeowner checking for weather damage on his property downstream found Miller's body at about 11 p.m.
