Arizona DCS Director Presents Plans To Deal With Case Backlog

The director of the Department of Child Safety will update Arizona legislators on the agency’s progress Wednesday morning.

This is the third Child Safety Oversight Committee hearing for Director Greg McKay. This time, he will propose ways to deal with the backlog of nearly 15,000 inactive cases.

DCS spokesman Doug Nick said McKay will also talk about strategies to prevent children from entering the system.

“The agency updates are going to include some discussion about our differentiated response protocol where we are proposing some changes to state law that would allow us to do some differentiated responses when cases come into our hotline so we can best deploy our resources," Nick said.

One proposed change would be adding the Building Resilient Families program, which helps get families services before a crisis hits. Legislators are also expecting staffing updates.
