Tucson's mayor says a strike by bus workers is hurting the community and is encouraging both sides to resolve their differences.
Jonathan Rothschild issued a statement Tuesday on the strike that began Aug. 6.
About 530 unionized bus drivers, mechanics, operators and other Sun Tran employees are striking over safety and wage issues.
It has severely limited service for passengers in Tucson who have just eight routes to choose from in the 236-square-mile city.
Sun Tran provides about 66,000 passenger rides on an average weekday.
Rothschild says he and the Tucson City Council cannot intervene in the negotiations by law.
Tucson bus workers also went on strike in 1997, 2001 and 2010.
The 2001 strike lasted around 10 days and was the longest in recent history for Sun Tran workers.
