Arizonans who still owe state taxes could take advantage of an amnesty program.
One provision in the state budget requires the Arizona Department of Revenue to set up an amnesty program in hopes of generating an extra $15 million this fiscal year.
Those who come forward now would have to pay only the taxes owed without interest or a 25 percent penalty.
Agency spokesman Sean Laux said a number of people could qualify.
"Taxpayers who have a balance with us for whatever reason, audit or collections case. Or you've never filed. So for folks for either to come forward or be able to come into compliance, pay off their tax debt, and get it at a lower cost," said Laux.
Laux said the amnesty isn’t available for anyone with a prior conviction for tax fraud. But Laux said even taxpayers who already are in the middle of an audit or even have been assessed for some back taxes can take advantage of the amnesty.
The amnesty window begins on Sept. 1.
