Federal inspectors will host an open house Tuesday in Avondale to discuss the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station’s annual safety review.

Nuclear safety officials said the facility, operated by the Arizona Public Service Company, is running safely and no additional oversight is needed. The station broke its own record for power generation last year, according to APS.

Located about 55 miles west of downtown Phoenix, Palo Verde was the nation’s largest power producer for the 23rd consecutive year in 2014, APS said. The plant’s three reactors generate enough energy for about 4 million people living in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas.

Inspectors will answer safety and oversight questions during the open house scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at Estrella Mountain Community College, 3000 N. Dysart Rd.
