The Arizona Department of Corrections is working to find a new private prison company to operate a facility in Kingman. This comes less than a week after the release of a scathing report that led Gov. Doug Ducey to cancel the contract with current operator.
The review identified problems with the way the company ran the facility and responded to riots in early July. Management and Training Corporation (MTC) will continue to operate the Kingman prison until a new company takes it over. The reassignment won’t go through the formal public bidding process and could take a few months.
In fact, the Department of Corrections said MTC could recommend another company to finish out the remaining five years of its contract, but the department has to approve any recommendations.
MTC operates another facility in Marana, which is not impacted by this process. However, all of the state’s privately operated prisons are under review. Critics say reassigning the contract to another private prison company won’t fix the problems.
