The Phoenix Zoo was among the hard hit areas from Monday night’s storm.
Phoenix Zoo staff and cleanup crews are removing debris spread throughout the property. Monday night’s storm caused minor damage, including torn down trees. A couple trees on pathway fences.
Zoo officials said all the animals are fine. Most were in their night houses when the storm came through.
“We do have damage to fence lines and some exhibits. We just really have a lot of trees that are down," said Linda Hardwick, Phoenix Zoo spokeswoman. "I would say the trees are about 40 to 60 to 70 years-olds. So, we are going through and trying to clean-up that as quickly as we can.”
Hardwick said some good will come from the damage.
“Fortunate part what we can do with these tree is we actually can use them for brous for several of our animals. We also can use the trunks for some of the exhibits furniture," she said. "So, whether it’s going to be composted or actually used by the animals in the zoo, that’s what will be happening to a large majority of these trees.”
The zoo will be closed until cleanup and repairs are completed. Hardwick said Tuesday afternoon the zoo will be closed at least through Wednesday. Updates will be available on the zoo’s website.
