Storm Damage Forces Phoenix VA To Transfer Patients

Damage caused by Monday’s monsoon storm left about 40 percent of the Phoenix VA Health Care System’s beds temporarily unusable, an official said.

A contractor has been brought in to check for water damage and mold in every room, said public affairs officer Jean Schaefer.

“The hospital transferred a number of patients into rooms that were available in the hospital," Schaefer said. "We transferred others to the community hospitals. And we have sent some patients to the Prescott and Tucson VA Medical Centers.”

It’s too early in the process to estimate how long repairs will take, Schaefer said.

In the meantime, the Phoenix VA is not accepting new emergency room admissions or transfers from other hospitals. The hospital is currently operating with 105 beds, instead of the normal 172.
