Poll: Most Arizonans Say Not Enough Money Spent On Public Schools

A new survey shows a majority of Arizonans do not think the state spends enough on its public schools.

The automated telephone survey conducted earlier this week found 12.6 percent of the 857 polled found K-12 education funding above average, while 36 percent considered it poor.

Pollster Mike Noble said 46 percent of those surveyed also said they planned to sign a petition to recall Arizona Superintendent Diane Douglas, while 28 percent said they definitely would not.

“Typically, when you're newly elected, you usually have pretty decent approval numbers because they'll give you a chance," said Noble. "And to see how poorly those numbers were is very shocking to see for someone that is so early on in their term."

But, Noble said Douglas, who has had a high-profile fight with the Arizona Board of Education, may have no one to blame but herself.

A spokeswoman for Douglas said the superintendent is not focused on poll results. She said Douglas will have a comprehensive plan Oct. 1 based on what she heard on her listening sessions around the state.
