Visitors to the Red Rock area near Sedona may be getting a break. The U.S. Forest Service is considering reducing areas requiring a pass.
Currently a fee is required to visit areas along State Route 179, between the Village of Oak Creek and Sedona. As well as along State Route 89A, between Sedona and Thomas Point. The proposed plan eliminates these entire areas to a few sites with amenities that require fees. The Coconino National Forest is also proposing adding two new sites — a picnic and trailhead area requiring fees.
“The fee program allows for the charging of a fee and that money goes right back to taking care of these sites. The second reason to eliminate these small for people to understand when they go into a site this is the place where the fee is required," said Coconino National Forest spokeswoman Jennifer Burns.
The Coconino National Forest wants public comments through September.
