Metro Phoenix Tops Average Rainfall During Monsoon Season

The Valley’s monsoon season is nearly over. It ends in the middle of next week, but for the central deserts this has been a pretty good year for precipitation.

The metro Phoenix area usually gets just less than 2.75 inches of rain in a typical monsoon season.

This year, meteorologist Charlotte Dewey says we’re a bit ahead of that pace with 3.29 inches of precipitation so far.

“We get these spotty, infrequent thunderstorms and when we do get them, a lot of times they’re very heavy rainers, so we can get a lot of rain out of one storm system," Dewey said.

While we’re above average on the central deserts, Arizona’s high country is just a touch below the seasonal norm, of 8.4 inches and the southeastern part of the state is virtually at the average of 6.3 inches of rain.

The Arizona monsoon season officially runs through Wednesday.
