Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar Takes On Planned Parenthood President During House Committee Hearing

The first hearing in the debate over the use of taxpayer money to fund Planned Parenthood began today in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

During the meeting, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards fielded questions from the committee, including Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar. During his questioning on why there is a need for Planned Parenthood clinics while other small privately owned health centers provide similar services, the conversation became heated.

“Our entire focus is on serving as many patients as we can,” Richards said.

“That’s not exactly true,” Gosar said. “Because what you’ve done now, and the reason why I can show this, is you’ve narrowed the focus. What we’ve end up having is very few primary docs because they can’t afford to stay in practice. So, what you’ve done is narrow the scope of the practice, so that they’re profit centers.”

“I disagree,” said Richards,

“No, this is my time. So, don’t interrupt it,” said Gosar.

Richards said that Planned Parenthood does generate revenue to provide services but is a nonprofit organization. She said what money they do make goes to expand care to areas where there is an unmet need.
