Seven Valley Cities And Towns Start Special Census

Hundreds of census workers hit the streets Thursday. They are doing a mid-decade special census count because seven Valley cities and towns believe they’ve had significant population growth.

Gilbert stands to gain the most from these new population counts. The town projects it has grown more than 12 percent in the last five years. That growth means the town is entitled to a larger portion of state shared revenue.

Project Manager Justine Bruno said Gilbert could gain as much as an additional $20 million in state shared money over the next five years.

“We would hope to use it for parks, roads, and infrastructure as well as prepare for buildout,” Bruno said.

Gilbert and the other cities are moving forward with the special census in the next two months.
