Arizona Mayors In Mexico To Encourage Trade Efforts

Six Arizona mayors are joining two dozen business leaders and economic development officials in a trade mission to Mexico this week.

The mayors of Tucson, Mesa, Surprise, Nogales and Yuma are joining Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in the effort to increase trade between the countries. The group met Monday with Mexico’s international economic development arm, which recently opened a Phoenix office.

They’ll also be meeting with officials from Mexico’s tech-hub incubator. The Arizona Technology Council will sign a memorandum of understanding to help startup tech companies in both Arizona and Mexico grow and find new markets across the border.

Another highlight of the trip will be a town hall meeting with university students. The plan is to discuss topics ranging from innovation and migration to human rights and interculturalism.

Stanton calls the trip a page-turning moment for Arizona in its relationship with Mexico. He expects it to benefit the economies of both countries.
