Phoenix May Ban Dogs On Camelback Mountain Trail

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board is considering banning dogs on a popular Camelback Mountain trail.

Gregg Bach with the city of Phoenix said the proposal, which affects the Cholla Trail, comes from the ongoing interest of public safety for both hikers and dogs.

Bach said the proposed ban is also an effort to stay consistent with the Echo Canyon and Piestewa Peak trails, where dogs are currently banned.

“Really, the main reason that we’re doing it is based off of that degree of difficulty at Cholla and how it matches up with that same degree of difficulty for those other two," Bach said. "So kind of creating some of those standards and how they connect into safety.”

Bach said dogs will continue to be allowed on other trails. The proposal will be discussed at a board meeting on Oct. 22.
