The American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials has signed off on a 573-mile long east-route that route that will run through the state from the California to New Mexico borders.
Arizona Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Michael Sanders said gaining visitors to the state was a major factor in the creation of what will be known as Bicycle Route 90.
“Part of this is definitely related to the tourism industry. Many people out have this desire to come to Arizona to see the attractions," said Sanders.
"With this designation now, we think that’s going to bring more interest — more bicyclists interested in seeing our state.”
An ADOT study completed in 2014 estimated that out of state bicyclists generate more than $88 million annually in economic effect to the state.
The designation does not involve building new infrastructure. The route will follow existing state highways, local streets and paths.
But Sanders adds cyclists can expect a more comfortable ride.
“Part of the criteria too isn’t just about the facility, but also about the services they need along the way, to make sure there are places to get food, water, lodging, camping and so on," said Sander.
