Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is among the top 50 "megahubs" in the world, according to the air travel company OAG.
Megahubs are defined as those airports with the highest ration of possible connections to the facility’s maximum number of destinations. With 778 connections, the Sky Harbor ranked 10th on the index, for accommodating global travel.
Airport spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez said a major overhaul has helped bring the airport to world-class status.
“We’re modernizing Terminal 3. Improving our checkpoint. That will be the first stage, is an expanded and consolidated checkpoint in Terminal 3. We’re improving our ticket counters, our baggage claim area, we’re expanding gates and concourses,” she said.
Rodriguez said the restaurant makeover at Terminal 4 a few years ago and the addition of local and regional restaurants — and the overhaul of retail space now underway — have also helped.
