Glendale Could Soon Get More Flashing Yellow Traffic Lights

The city of Glendale is moving forward in a process to install flashing yellow arrows for left turns at major intersections.

The yellow arrows can be found in cities around the Valley including Scottsdale and Mesa. Glendale already has two in place. Glendale traffic engineer Kiran Guntupalli said the shift in signal lights can reduce accidents.

“Looking at the flashing yellow arrow, people will look for much safer gaps between traffic before making the left turn, rather than just proceeding into the left turn,” he said.

Guntupalli saidthe installations will cost about $4.5 million and take multiple phases to implement.

He also said the installations include more than just changing traffic heads, such as altering concrete medians and paint lines.
