Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán.

Fugitive drug trafficker Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán is suffering from injuries to his leg and face following a confrontation with Mexican Marines. NBC News reported over the weekend that Guzman was hurt escaping from a ranch in the mountains of western Mexico.

NBC News reporter Mark Potter broke this story. He spoke with three sources who each corroborate the latest chapter in the saga of “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Mexican Marines were apparently close to boss of the Sinaloa Federation after U.S. agents intercepted cell phone signals suggesting "El Chapo" was hiding in the Sierra Madre.

A search continues after new details have emerged about Guzmán's escape from a maximum-security prison in July. Video previously released but missing audio was published Thursday with the missing sound by the Mexican network Televisa.

Loud hammering can be heard on the footage before Guzmán slips through a hole in the cell floor into a tunnel.

Mexico won’t say when the operation took place, only that information from international agencies had led Mexican agents to what the Mexican government believes was a near encounter.
