A Glendale company that stores cotton suffered millions of dollars in damage from Sunday’s storm as almost half of Calcot Limited’s warehouses near 51st Avenue and Camelback Road were flattened.
The storm destroyed 17 of Calcot’s 38 warehouses. The company stores cotton from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas farms, and much of it is shipped overseas.
Calcot Assistant Superintendent Reginald Clark said the destruction looks like a tornado hit it.
“We’ve had damage to the warehouses before but not like this," Clark said. "This is just totally devastated.”
Saving storm-soaked cotton bales from rot and mildew will help keep losses down, said Clark, who estimated damages will cost more than $10 million.
“We’re going to bring them out,” Clark said. "We’re going to line them up. And then we’ll lean them over, tilt them and let the air dry them out.”
