Residents in Navajo County in the north eastern part of the state were under a tornado warning Tuesday morning. In the Valley, funnel clouds were reported near both Wickenburg and Anthem.
Ken Waters with the National Weather Service said those are a rare event here in Arizona known as cold-air funnels.
“In areas where we get these very high vertical wind sheers, we can get occasions where we get these cold air funnel clouds like we have seen today,” he said.
Waters said these funnel clouds have been supported by Tuesday’s unsettled atmosphere, which is also causing many of the pop up thunderstorms.
He said the funnel clouds are not considered a threat until they touch ground, thus becoming a tornado.
