The Arizona Motor Vehicle department has changed the way it scores one of the most stressful parts of the behind-the-wheel driver's test.
According to the new scoring system, drivers will only have one chance to parallel park and execute a three-point turn. Instead of three chances to pass or fail, the new system is based on points.
Ryan Harding with the Arizona Department of Transportation said drivers can get eight points of infractions before the test is over.
“You know, they only committed a couple infractions and earned two to four points, they still pass," Harding said. "And it’s OK because the point is, we’re not trying to see if they can parallel park as much as, can you handle your vehicle? Can you maneuver the vehicle? That's what we really want to see."
The new scoring system has been put into place statewide.
Harding said the change was done to save time allowing for more road tests to be given over the course of a day.
