Arizona Education: Lawmakers Review Proposed Settlement Deal

It’s been a busy few days for education advocates in Arizona — lawmakers are being briefed on the details of a proposed settlement deal reached late last week, and a special session could start as early as tomorrow.

At issue is a court ruling that the legislature shorted schools' voter-approved money for inflation during the Great Recession. Chuck Essigs, director of government relations for the Arizona Association of School Business Officials gave his perspective.

In a statement announcing the deal, Gov. Doug Ducey’s office said his goal is to get the money to teachers and kids as soon as possible. Rebecca Gau, executive director of Stand for Children Arizona, also spoke about the issue.

Howie Fischer, of Capitol Media Services, explained what kind of reception the plan has been getting from legislators.
