The flu season has started in Arizona. But it’s not too late to protect yourself and others, infectious disease experts say.
Arizona has recorded cases of influenza already this fall and the flu season extends into spring. Now is the time to take action to avoid this illness.
“It takes about two weeks to get full protection from a vaccine, any vaccine, including the flu," said Sean Elliott, medical director of infection prevention at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson.
Elliott said it’s never too late to get protected — and don’t use the fear of getting sick for not getting a shot.
“The short answer is, no, you cannot get influenza from the influenza shot," he said.
Once vaccinated, Elliott says wash your hands throughout the fall and winter.
“The No. 1 infection prevention technique in hospitals, in the communities, at school, at work is adequate and effective washing of hands. Add that to the flu vaccine, and it will be a great, safe flu season for everybody," said Elliott.
