Arizona Researchers Aim To Prevent Firefighters From Getting Cancer

Researchers at University of Arizona will be working with the Tucson Fire Department and others on a new three-year project aimed at preventing firefighters from getting cancer.

FEMA awarded the team a grant worth $1.5 million to work on the project, which will monitor both what firefighters are exposed to in the air and what chemicals come out in their urine. Dr. Jeff Burgess is the associate dean for research and a professor at the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. Burgess is also the study’s lead researcher.
