The Arizona Board of Education this week appointed a new executive director.
Karol Schmidt currently serves as director of academic programs at Grand Canyon University and will take over at the State Board on November 30.
State Schools Superintendent Diane Douglas tried to fire Schmidt’s soon-to-be predecessor before Governor Doug Ducey stepped in. The state education department and board of education are currently engaged in multiple lawsuits. Karol Schmidt spoke about what drew her to the job and about its political controversies.
