Phoenix St. Mary’s Food Bank May Fall Short On Turkey Donations

With Thanksgiving just a couple weeks away, St. Mary’s Food Bank is concerned there won’t be enough turkeys to meet the need.

The food bank said it’s several thousand birds short of its turkey goal and points to a bird flu outbreak at turkey farms as the big reason.

Jerry Brown of St. Mary’s said another concern is the possibility of stores limiting purchases of turkeys.

“We hope that there’s no kind of purchase limits that are put on by the stores, because that will certainly affect us.  If you can only buy one per family, that’s definitely gonna go to your family,” Brown said.

If the food bank is not able to meet its goal, he said they will replace the turkey in their food baskets with another protein.  He said, however, that there is a lot of symbolism and comfort in the ability to have the turkey on the table for Thanksgiving.
