Pine nuts have been recalled across more than 25 states, including Arizona. This comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found salmonella in the nuts after a random sampling.
The recall is for 2- and 3-ounce packages of Melissa’s Italian Pine Nuts, being voluntarily pulled by Los Angeles-based World Variety Produce, Inc.
No illness has been tied to the nuts yet.
Jessica Rigler is with the state health department’s Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control. She said that even if people do get sick, it’s likely they won’t need medical attention.
"But if they’re having uncontrolled diarrhea or they’re getting very dehydrated, it is important to see your health-care provider or go to the hospital," she said.
In addition to diarrhea, symptoms include stomach cramping and fever. Rigler said Arizona sees about 1,000 cases of salmonella every year.
