The proposed funding bill for K-12 education is being filed in the Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday afternoon.
After the paperwork is filed, officials will officially begin to campaign for Proposition 123. If approved, the proposition will deliver Arizona schools an additional $3.5 billion over the next decade.
Gov. Doug Ducey called for a special session in October to create a permanent boost to state K-12 education spending by adjusting per capita student funding and the distribution level of proceeds from the sales of state trust land. Distributions would increase yearly for 10 years to more quickly pay schools $2.2 billion dollars already earmarked for them.
The legislation passed with bipartisan backing.
Because the proposition will amend the Arizona state Constitution, it will require voter approval during a special election in May.
