ASU Program Helps Former Foster Children Navigate University

There were more than 14,000 kids in foster care or with relatives in Arizona, as of March.

In 2013, state lawmakers approved a bill giving tuition waivers at public universities and community colleges to any foster child who’d been in care on or after their 16th birthday. In response, ASU started a program called Bridging Success. Justine Cheung, Bridging Success’ program coordinator, and Arizona State University freshman Cynthia Alaffa, who’s a part of the program, spoke about the program.
