The number of Mexican immigrants in the U.S. that have moved back to Mexico now outpaces those making the journey here. That’s according to new data released by the Pew Research Center.
Mexican demographic data show that between 2009 and 2014 more than 1 million Mexicans moved back to Mexico from the United States. U.S. Census information reveals roughly 870,000 Mexican Nationals made the move here in the same time period.
The exact reason for the decline is not entirely clear. Some demographers say it could be the result of a slow economic recovery in the U.S. since the great recession. Stricter enforcement of immigration law is also a factor.
According to Mexican population data, most of the 1 million people that moved back to Mexico did so on their own, and mostly for family reunification.
